Manchester United Football Club had scouts attending Sunday’s Portuguese league clash between FC Porto and SL Benfica.
That’s according to the Manchester Evening News, as planning for a crucial January transfer window is underway.
The report says that it is unclear as to who United specifically went there to scout, although you’d have to assume that defenders are at the top of the wishlist.
Benfica’s Ruben Dias had an excellent game at the heart of defence, so no doubt the scout would have kept a close watch on his display.
I think that the board have a decision to make. They either have to back their man as soon as the window opens, or relieve him of his duties. In the modern-day game, there is no in between.
If you want to challenge for titles, you have to splash the cash. Unfortunately, there is no getting around that.
United have, on the whole, done pretty well with signings from the Portuguese league. Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani immediately spring to mind, while from the current squad, Victor Lindelof and Marcos Rojo are still playing their part. It’ll be intriguing to see which names from either FC Porto or SL Benfica crop up in the papers between now and the January window, but I’ll certainly be keeping a close eye on proceedings.
