Manchester United have had their defensive injury struggles this season. Just when it looks like Jose Mourinho is going to have a full complement of players, another one goes down with a problem.
The latest man to limp out of action is Chris Smalling, as the Englishman was taken off during the game against Fulham.
Now, according to the Daily Mail, he’ll miss the Red Devils’ game against Valencia CF as the club look to manage his fractured foot injury…
I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that, over the last few years, Smalling has been Mourinho’s go-to centre-back. He may not be the most talented, nor the best when in possession, but he always gives 100% for the cause and that has to be admired.
At 29, he’s the senior player of the group and if we’re without him for any prolonged period of time, that could be a problem. Hopefully, he can play through the pain barrier if that’s what’s required of Smalling, as during the hectic winter period, the games do come thick and fast.
For the Valencia game, it’ll be intriguing to see what pair Mourinho opts for. Personally, I’d like to see Marcos Rojo and Eric Bailly get the nod as they’re both top players who have been underused recently.
