Over the summer, Manchester United continued to be linked with a move for Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff.

The 21-year-old was seemingly Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s only viable choice for a midfield signing, though in the end, nothing concrete materialised.

Well, if the Red Devils want to renew their interest in Longstaff it could be about to get much tougher, as according to The Times, Newcastle are in talks with the United summer transfer target about handing him a new £80,000-a-week contract.

Having valued Longstaff at £50million when United tried to sign him, Newcastle realise they need to significantly increase his salary from the current £25,000-a-week he currently takes home. If the new figures turn out to be correct, the midfielder will more than triple his current wage packet.

The Reds were willing to offer somewhere around the £20million mark and those talks soon stalled, but Newcastle are keen to further enhance his value and put him on similar wages to their top earner, Jonjo Shelvey…

With a good season, Longstaff’s value will only sky-rocket. The fact that he was injured over the summer probably brought the price down a little bit, ad if the 20-time Premier League champions are to return and make another offer, you get the feeling he’ll cost significantly more.
