Manchester United’s defensive struggles all stem from the poor summer transfer window. The club failed to acquire a new centre-back for Jose Mourinho, and wouldn’t you know it, we’ve shipped goals for fun all season.
Now, it looks as though the Red Devils are trying to right those wrongs, as in a report from The Sun (h/t Bristol Live), United are ‘ramping up their efforts’ to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender, Toby Alderweireld.
The 29-year-old has just over eighteen months left on his current deal and is seemingly no closer to penning a long-term contract at White Hart Lane, thus giving United, and others, the opportunity to make their move.
I said it over the summer and I’ll say it again. Alderweireld is the perfect signing for this young Manchester United team. They need experience, they need a leader, they need quality.
The main problem will be prising him away from Daniel Levy’s grasp. He loves to extort as much money as possible when clubs come sniffing around for Spurs’ star players, and this will be no different, perhaps even more so as we’re a direct rival.
Hopefully, though, Edward Woodward can get this deal done. Preferably in January…
