Man United want Edinson Cavani, contract expires this summer: report

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer played an absolute blinder when he sanctioned a short-term loan deal to sign Odion Ighalo.

The Nigerian has been simply sublime since completing the switch to Old Trafford, though I still wonder whether he’s the long-term answer.

It seems as though United are having that same thought, too – judging by the latest story from AS’s Wednesday print edition, translated by Sport Witness.

They’re claiming that Edinson Cavani is now on the Red Devils’ radar, as United ‘want’ the 33-year-old striker, who’s available on a free transfer this summer.

As you’d imagine, United face competition, from Boca Juniors, Inter Miami and Atletico Madrid. All have been labelled as ‘main competitors’.

My initial thought was that if United want Cavani badly enough, they should be able to blow those competitors out of the water.

However, I don’t really see a point in this deal. Cavani’s £9m-per-year deal would be a stumbling block, while Ighalo is willing to take a pay-cut to remain a Red Devil, while being three years Cavani’s junior.

When you factor in the Nigerian’s incredible start to life in Manchester, it only tips the scales further in Ighalo’s favour. Who’s to say Cavani would play this well? Don’t forget that the Uruguayan probably wouldn’t want to be playing back-up to Anthony Martial, either.

For now, I’d suggest that looking right under our noses seems to be the best option here. After all, the last time United went out and signed a ‘marquee’ name for no transfer fee, it didn’t really work out did it…?
