Manchester United want to sign FC Barcelona’s star midfielder, Andre Gomes. That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, translated via The Metro. The report actually goes one further than that, by claiming that Gomes’ agent, Jorge Mendes, was spotted in Catalonia heading to the Nou Camp to discuss the deal.
The Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo state that Mendes was heading in that direction for a number of reasons, including discussing a deal for Arda Turan potentially heading to Arsenal, as well as United’s proposed move for Portuguese midfielder Gomes.
Mendes apparently presented several bids that were on the table from Jose Mourinho and his club, but the Spanish side aren’t keen on losing one of their star players; with new Barca boss, Ernesto Valverde believing that the 23-year-old still has a role to play.
Gomes didn’t have the best of seasons last year, as he played 30 games in total – of which only 17 were starts. It’s fair to say he was in and out of proceedings, and that must be extremely frustrating.
For United, they definitely need to invest in a new midfielder in my opinion. We have great quality in the form of both Paul Pogba and Ander Herrera, but the strength in depth just isn’t there – particularly in the holding midfielder role with an ageing Michael Carrick the only real option.
Bringing in Gomes would go a long way to solving those problems, and no doubt he’d bring some much-needed ability to the table. It seems as though tempting Barca into selling may prove to be quite difficult, however.
