Manchester United Football Club have been pretty diabolical to start this season, although there has been one big success story; Luke Shaw.
The left-back has been excellent game-in-game-out, however, that hasn’t stopped Jose Mourinho hunting for a replacement. That’s if a report from Spanish media outlet Sport, translated by the Manchester Evening News, is to be believed.
They say that the Red Devils are monitoring Jordi Alba’s contract situation, with a view to making a move for the 29-year-old speedster who’s current contract expires next season.
Alba is currently involved in a contract dispute with FC Barcelona, and if no agreement is reached, the Catalan giants will be left with no option but to sell the Spaniard next summer, in order not to lose him on a free transfer.
He’s quick, an excellent passer and a good crosser of the football, but defensively, I worry about him. He’s also not getting any younger, and although it’d be a cheap signing, bringing Alba in would be somewhat of a gamble.
Personally, I’d prefer to see United keep the faith with an ever-improving Shaw. He’s younger, has Premier League experience and is growing with each passing game. Why not develop a star of the future rather than opting for a short-term fix?
