Last month, we covered a story from Le10Sport in which it was claimed that Manchester United were interested in signing Ajax midfielder, Donny van de Beek.
The transfer hype around the Dutchman has only intensified over the last week or so, with every possibility that Van de Beek could be on the move this summer.
Well, United interest in the classy 23-year-old has been confirmed by none other than Edwin van der Saar. With just two years left to run on Van de Beek’s contract, Ajax have a real decision to make this summer…
Reported by NOS and translated by The Sun, Van der Sar said: “It’s clear that clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester United are showing interest in Donny van de Beek.”
In a year’s time, Van de Beek’s transfer value will be considerably lower. Ajax either have to cash in now, or tie the Dutchman down to a new, long-term contract. The latter looks unlikely at this juncture.
Despite the addition of Bruno Fernandes, United’s midfield still feels one-man light. Van de Beek would fill that void and take United up another notch. He fits the profile of the player that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has leaned towards signing, too.
Make no mistake about it, though, Real Madrid won’t go down without a fight. Financially, United can compete with them but their recent history far outweighs the Red Devils’.
It’s definitely going to be interesting to see how this saga plays out and I’d like to think that United do have a realistic chance at making this deal happen…
