Every so often those weird footballing transfer stories appear on the back pages. For me, this is probably the strangest one so far during the summer of 2019…

According to Mundo Deportivo, FC Barcelona have the versatile Manchester United defender, Matteo Darmian, on their shortlist of potential summer signings.

Apparently, the Catalonian giants are looking at the 29-year-old Darmian as cover for Jordi Alba at left-back, while the Italy international can also play at right-back or centre-half if needed.

It has felt like Darmian has been on his way out of Old Trafford for at least eighteen months now, but to no avail thus far. With just one year left on his current contract, for United, it’s sell him now or lose him for nothing this time next summer.

Timing-wise, this one actually fits as United named a 26-man squad that is now in Norway for the game against Kristiansund. Guess who isn’t there? Yep, no Darmian…

I’m still left in complete shock at the quality of teams who Darmian is always linked with. Juventus’ name always tends to crop up, as does Inter Milan, but Barcelona is another step up. I’m guessing their scouts haven’t watched the Italian with much regularity recently but he has been appalling for the Red Devils whenever given the chance to start.
