Manchester United could have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, and it’s down to FC Barcelona.
According to Tuttosport, via the Daily Express, Barcelona want to sign Miralem Pjanic from Juventus, and in turn, that will lead the Turin club to replace him with the aforementioned Serbian midfielder.
Jose Mourinho has been linked with a move to sign the 23-year-old who’s currently at the World Cup with his nation, but United’s hopes could have been scuppered rather significantly; particularly if the player wants to stay in Italy.
I know the club have agreed a deal to sign Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk, but the club still need that box-to-box midfielder who’ll free up Paul Pogba. Milinkovic-Savic would be the ideal player to do exactly that, although he’d likely cost a pretty penny.
You have to factor in Michael Carrick’s retirement, plus we’re still waiting to learn whether Marouane Fellaini plans on sticking around beyond this summer. All roads point to United needing another central midfielder.
We also have to remember that we’re unlikely to hear anything concrete until the player returns home from the World Cup. Serbia kicked off their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Costa Rica, in a game in which Milinkovic-Savic was excellent.
