Manchester United Football Club have always been superb when it comes to developing and nurturing young talents. It’s a mantra that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been more-than-willing to press on with.
Mason Greenwood, Brandon Williams and Marcus Rashford are the biggest examples, though waiting in the wings there are some more top-quality talents; including Angel Gomes.
The attacking-midfielder has been used sparingly at first-team level, despite impressing massively on pre-season tour. With a winding down contract, the Englishman Gomes hasn’t been sent on loan, instead, he’s playing U23 level football.
Tonight, Gomes was named in the PL2 team to take on Stoke City. Within 45 minutes, the attacker had made an impact with an incredible assist and a then a goal. He’s just too good for reserve football.
The second half hadn’t even started and the United fans were heaping praise on the 19-year-old, rightly so, too. He’s a cut above U23 standard, so Solskjaer has a decision to make.
Right now, it does feel as though Gomes will be on his way out. United haven’t played this one well, at all. Make no mistake about it, they’ll be massive interest in his service from both English shores and further afar, all of whom will be planting massive contract offers on the table.
United have to either give him the promise of increased game-time and/or match those big-money deals that will be heading his way. Hopefully, we can come to some arrangement, with Gomes seeing a massive jump-up in minutes during the 2020/21 season. After all, if he doesn’t make the breakthrough over the next twelve months then I’m not sure he ever will…
