Manchester United have clearly prioritised the centre-back slot as an area they desperately need to strengthen this summer, with Louis van Gaal drawing up a shortlist of a whole host of potential options for the club.
Another name to add to the list is Benedikt Howedes. The Schalke defender has emerged as a candidate for Van Gaal, after the 27-year old played his part in another impressive defensive season for the German side.
Howedes is an absolutely fantastic defender but is often overlooked by the likes of Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels in the Bundesliga, but when called upon the Schalke man always comes up trumps.
The Guardian go on to say that Mats Hummels does remain the top target, but if any move for Hummels fails then Howedes would then be Louis van Gaal’s priority.
