Manchester United have been long-term admirers of Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane, despite opting to sign Phil Jones instead of him a few years ago. According to The Mirror, Louis van Gaal is monitoring his situation with a view to making a bid for the 21-year old in the summer.
Real Madrid have preferred the duo of Sergio Ramos and Pepe at the heart of their defence, which has led to Varane’s chances being limited and now the defender is after a move away from the club in order to find more playing time elsewhere.
He is under contract until 2020, so it’d take a hefty bid thought to be in the region of £25million to prise him away from the grasp of Carlo Ancelotti.
Personally I would prefer signing a centre-back with a bit more experience, but if we were to move in for a younger defender, Raphael Varane would be my first choice by a comfortable distance. The young Frenchman has it all, and is more than talented enough to become one of the finest centre-halves in the world.
