We’re at that time of year when the Golden Boy shortlist is rapidly cut down. Now, the world’s media have chopped their list to 20.
In years gone by, Manchester United have had three winners since its inception in 2003; Wayne Rooney, Anderson and Anthony Martial. This time around, the Red Devils still have one name in the running.
90min.com have the full list available, but it was a pleasant surprise to see 19-year-old full-back Diogo Dalot included.
After joining from FC Porto over the summer, Dalot spent the early goings of the season out injured. We have seen him play a few times though, and the young man from Portugal has been mightily impressive.
It has been a while since we’ve had an actual right-back in the team, rather than a converted winger or someone else playing out of position. He has been a breath of fresh air, and the sooner he gets regular playing time, the better.
Where this year’s Golden Boy award is confirmed, I’m fairly confident that Dalot won’t be anywhere near the top of the list, with Kylian Mbappe set to defend his crown from twelve months ago, but it’s just nice to see his talent getting the recognition it richly deserves.
