Manchester United are believed to be leading the race to sign Arsenal centre-back Thomas Vermaelen, according to the Daily Mail. The 28-year old is out of contract this summer, and is available on a free transfer as he looks to revive his career after being left out in favour of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.
The Belgian has often been frustrated by niggling injuries, and only managed 14 league appearances last term. However, if fully fit, Vermaelen could be a useful addition to Manchester United football club.
He’d be on a free transfer, so there’d be no huge transfer fee to pay out, and he wouldn’t command huge wages either. It’d certainly make sense to bring him in, as Manchester United need two centre-backs to replace Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.
Vermaelen has also received an offer from Italy, but Manchester United are in pole position for his signature.
