Manchester United veteran set for call-up to England squad for World Cup: report

Makeshift Manchester United left-back Ashley Young is set for a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England World Cup squad.

That’s what the Daily Mail writes, with the report also stating Danny Rose is set to be included in the 23-man squad; meaning Ryan Bertrand will be left at home.

It really has been a remarkable year for Young. The Englishman has turned into Jose Mourinho’s go-to left-back; playing 37 games across all competitions, the most he has ever played in a single season at Old Trafford.

After the work he has put in this term, he more than deserves one last hurrah with the England team. He’ll bring some vital experience to the table, and you should get good odds for Young starting the Three Lions’ opening game in Russia, as Rose has barely played for Tottenham Hotspur this term.

Young may not be the most technically gifted left-back you’ve ever seen, but he’ll absolutely work his socks off for the cause. That’s something that simply cannot be underrated going into a major international tournament, where the odds are already against England.

I’dalso like to throw Luke Shaw’s name into the mix. The former Southampton man is someone I feel immensely sorry for at the moment. He’s been completely frozen out by Mourinho once again this year, and surely he would have been aboard the plane if fully fit and ready?
