Manchester United centre-back finally resumes training after long-term injury

Manchester United have been without the services of Phil Jones for almost two months now, since his last piece of action mid-way through October. The England international took part in full training for the first time today, and although he is back with the first-team, he is unlikely to feature until Christmas in a couple of weeks.

That rules Jones out of the game against Liverpool on Sunday, probably out of United’s trip to Aston Villa the week after. The likely return game is Newcastle at home on Boxing Day, when United will hopefully have opened up a bit of a gap between themselves and the trailing pack.

Jones is widely regarded as the best centre-back in the current squad, but due to several injuries over the past few years, United have missed that consistent presence amongst the back-line that they need. Louis van Gaal won’t stand for the injuries that our defenders are currently picking up, and if they all don’t start to prove their fitness sooner rather than later, I can see the Dutchman cutting a lot of these guys from the squad next summer.

Is Jones our best defender? Leave you’re thoughts in the comment box below.
