According to the Mirror’s James Nursery, who is usually very reliable when it comes to transfer rumours coming out of Portugal, Manchester United are close to agreeing a deal with Benfica for centre-back Ezequiel Garay. The 27-year old has been linked with United on numerous occasions, but this time its coming from a creditable source.
With just one year left on his current deal, Garay is looking for a big-money move elsewhere – almost forcing the clubs hand into selling him now rather than losing him on a free in twelve months time. It is believed that United are in pole position for his signature, but a whole host of clubs including Manchester City are monitoring his current situation.
United want to get a deal wrapped up before the start of the World Cup in June, and if worst comes to the worst they can activate his £17m release clause in his contract – Although it is believed United want to get him for less than that.
Garay spent three years at Real Madrid before moving to Portugal, so he has previous experience of playing at the very top level.
