Manchester United Football Club have several issues in terms of the playing squad. Jose Mourinho wanted to address that in the summer, but Edward Woodward said no.
Now, though, it looks as though United’s vice-chairman could have had a change-of-heart. Apparently, Woodward is now ‘confident’ that the Red Devils can sign Diego Godin in January. That’s according to the Manchester Evening News, who cite a report from the Daily Star.
The Old Trafford club did show late interest in the Atletico Madrid centre-back over the summer, but the report claims that Woodward has held several rounds of talks with Godin and he feels that a deal could be agreed upon even before the winter window opens.
I love Godin, I think he’s world-class. Recently I read that he played through the game against Borussia Dortmund injured, and even scored late on in that match to ensure his side secured the victory. That’s the kind of attitude and desire United are desperately crying out for.
There is a concern, though. He’s 32 now, his best years are probably behind him. We’d only get a year, maybe two at most out of him, then you have the issue of replacing Godin. Personally, I’d prefer the club to opt for a more long-term solution. Who that is, I have no idea…
