Manchester United’s Phil Jones has often been utilised in different areas of the field to suit the needs of the team, but now, at 23, it simply has to be time for the young man to concentrate solely on one spot – and he’s outlined exactly where he’d like to play.
“I’ve said that CB is the position I want to play in. But if the manager calls me to play in RB position or wherever I can do it.” Jones said.
Its all well and good being that versatile player, but we’ve seen it time and time again. When a player is shifted around they never get the opportunity to nail down that one position in which they excel in – which in the long run, can be detrimental in harming their development.
In the twelve games Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have both started at centre-back together, Manchester United are yet to lose. Surely that tells Louis van Gaal all he needs to know about the two young Englishmen.
