Manchester United defender to miss WBA game after fifth booking of the season

Manchester United’s defensive problems have been mounting up over the last few weeks, with Paddy McNair out injured, Luke Shaw a long-term casualty, Antonio Valencia with a hamstring injury and Phil Jones running ‘in the red zone’ in terms of overall fitness.

The situation isn’t going to get any easier for Manchester United though, with Louis van Gaal set to be without Matteo Darmian after the Italian picked up his fifth booking of the season.

After a stunning start to life at his new club, Darmian has struggled over recent weeks and his fitness has come into question on occasion. Today he had a tough battle with Yannick Bolasie on the Crystal Palace right-hand side, and was eventually booked for a cynical tackle on the tricky winger.

It means he’ll now miss the game against West Brom, and with Antonio Valencia also sidelined we could even see Chris Smalling play at right-back for the game at Old Trafford next weekend…
