Manchester United Football Club have had one of the best goalkeepers on the planet on their books for the last few seasons; David de Gea. The Spaniard has been truly wonderful ever since his arrival, but the rumours linking him with a move to Real Madrid just will not go away.
Now, in an interesting article via the Daily Mail, Manchester United have apparently drawn up a three-man shortlist of potential replacements for De Gea, in case he does leave Old Trafford.
The first name on the list is perhaps the most surprising, and it is that of Joe Hart. The Manchester City keeper spent last season out in the Serie A on loan with Torino, and he had a mixed campaign. However, I just cannot see our fiercest of rivals selling Hart to us at any cost – it just wouldn’t be a smart business decision from them, and one that could come back to haunt them.
Next up we have one of the most talented young men on the planet; Gianluigi Donnarumma of AC Milan. The Italian has begun to make a real name for himself despite being barely eighteen. The potential Donnarumma has is truly frightening, and although he’d need a lot of work, it would be brilliant to see him make the move here.
Finally, we have Samir Handanovic. The man from Slovenia is experienced both domestically and internationally and I’ve always been of the opinion that he is one of the most underrated goalkeepers in the game right now. He’d bring experience to the table and Handanovic would have absolutely no problem with controlling the back four in front of him. This guy would be my number one choice.
Of course, we’d like to keep hold of David de Gea first and foremost but this list is pretty underwhelming if I’m honest. Joe Hart is levels below big Dave, Donnarumma needs too much nurturing and although I like Handanovic he is untested in the English league.
