Despite the fact that Manchester United are closing in on a deal to sign Victor Lindelof, it seems that Jose Mourinho isn’t stopping there when it comes to bolstering his defensive options. That’s according to German media outlet Bild, who say that the Red Devils are keeping track of Sokratis Papastathopoulos.
The Greek centre-back is currently plying his trade for Borussia Dortmund, and Sokratis has definitely emerged as one of their better defenders over the last twelve months or so.
However, if Mourinho’s interest is genuine, he will not have it all his own way if a bid materialises, as the report also states that Chelsea are showing an interest in signing the 29-year-old.
Personally, this is a defensive signing that the Old Trafford club have truly been desperate for. We’ve not had that experienced centre-half ever since Nemanja Vidic left a few years ago now, and at times, a lack of leadership has cost us.
Alright, we have some brilliantly talented footballers like Eric Bailly back there, but you need that wise old head to calm everyone down when the going gets tough, and bringing in Sokratis would go an awfully long way towards solving those problems.
My only concern is the fact that we have far too many out and out centre-backs. Right now, we have the aforementioned Bailly, Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof. You’d think that if we then added Sokratis, at least one of those guys would have to be moved on.
