Manchester United’s first competitive game of the season is in the books, and unfortunately, it ended in defeat. Real Madrid won the match 2-1, and to be honest, they dominated for the majority, but the Red Devils were always within touching distance.
Romelu Lukaku started the match and in the first half, he was left deserted up front all alone. Things changed in the second 45 as his teammates managed to get closer to him and offer up some better service.
The 24-year-old should have found the back of the net after a Paul Pogba effort was parried into his path but he blazed over. Then, shortly after, he made up for that as he bundled the ball home to give Manchester United hope.
I think it’s fair to say that Lukaku grew into the game, and on the whole, it was a positive outing for the star striker. The fact that he is scoring goals already is the most important thing, and personally, I’ve been superbly impressed with his hold-up play and all-round game.
The best thing is that he’ll keep improving as he adapts to playing alongside his new teammates, and with a long and hard season just around the corner, this man will find the back of the net on a regular basis for us.
As you’d imagine, the Twitterverse were encouraged with Lukaku’s display. Check out some of the best reactions below.

Impressed by Lukaku, held up the ball well & generally played well even before his goal.

United played well over all, not a good first half. Lukaku & Matic good as always. Lindelöf needs more time. #MUFC
