Well, the result may not have been what we all wanted to see, but there were one or two encouraging signs; mostly coming from Andreas Pereira.
The Brazil international is partaking in his third pre-season under Jose Mourinho, the first two ended in loan moves away, but you get the impression it’s going to be different this time around.
Against Liverpool, the attacking midfielder continued his rich vein of form. It’s not just the passing ability, the trickery and the on-ball presence and awareness, it’s the fact that he doesn’t look out of place.
It’s not easy to leave a goalkeeper completely standing still from the dead-ball situation, Pereira made that look easy when he lashed one into the top corner midway through the first half
Nobody is expecting the young man to start every week, rather just make himself a key fixture in the squad whom Mourinho can rotate in and out as he sees fit. Right now, he’s certainly proven just how important he can be over the next twelve months. He deserves credit for grasping his opportunity with both hands.
As you’d imagine, the Old Trafford faithful were absolutely buzzing all over social media, check out the best reactions below:
If United had signed Andreas Pereira this summer for £40m we'd all be bubbling with optimism for this season.

I know it’s only pre-season, but i love the look of Andreas Pereira as a central midfielder. Great passing range, movable and takes risks. He’ll be a key player for us this season. We’ve a very special kid on our hands.

Andreas Pereira with the goal of the tour. This guy has incredible potential. Give him a fair shot at CAM during the season and he'll do wonders.

Been so impressed with Andreas Pereira during this pre-season. Silky feet and has great awareness both defensively and offensively. Should be kept at the club this season – could play an important role.

As he did last year, Andreas Pereira looks great at DM for United. His movement to always give the centre-backs a passing option is really smart and his use of the ball is great. Always positive and doesn’t hold on to the ball too long

Andreas Pereira fighting with Sturridge and Fred rushed to defend him. That Brazilian connection is already there. #MUTour
