Manchester United Football Club witnessed the end of an era over the summer. Wayne Rooney was transferred to Everton, after the striker won absolutely everything with the Red Devils, and ended up as our top goalscorer of all time.
Today, Rooney returned to his second home. He led his Everton team into battle against his former pals, but it was the home side who came out on top with a 4-0 victory.
It was a weird feeling seeing Rooney playing at the Theatre of Dreams in opposing team colours, but he got a fantastic reception and that was nothing less than he deserved.
This is a man who gave us some excellent memories and well over a decade of service. He’s filled our trophy cabinet up nicely thanks to some superb goals and individual performances, and he’ll always have the fans’ respect.
However, as soon as the first whistle blew he became an enemy and thankfully, he didn’t get himself on the scoresheet – because I certainly thought he was going to.
Anyway, we’ve compiled some of the best tweets aimed at Manchester United’s former captain. Have a look at them here.
