As we all know, Manchester United made it to the final of the EFL Trophy last week, when Jose Mourinho’s men beat Hull City 3-2 on aggregate. That booked the Red Devils a place in the final against a talented Southampton team – in another potentially tricky fixture.
The game takes place at the end of February, at the national stadium, Wembley. Before the big final, Manchester United have been handed a rather early injury boost, with Southampton set to be without one of their key men.
Southampton have confirmed via their Twitter feed that star centre-back Virgil van Dijk, will be out for around two to three months with a severe ankle injury; meaning the 25-year-old will miss the Wembley showpiece.

As the saying goes, every little helps and all that. In my opinion, the Dutch centre-half has been one of the best in the Premier League this campaign, and often goes underrated because he doesn’t play for one of the so-called ‘bigger clubs’.
At the very least, this means that Claude Puel will now be forced into changing his team, and alright, he may have some time to find the right piece of the jigsaw – but I highly doubt the replacement he decides to utilise on the big day will be up to Van Dijk’s standard; a massive early boost for Manchester United.
