Manchester United Football Club have a truly world class goalkeeper in the form of David de Gea in between the sticks for the most part, which has meant limited chances for those below him. One player who has been at the club for quite a while is Sam Johnstone – but now he’s being targeted for a move away.
According to the Daily Mirror, Sunderland Football Club are ready to rival Aston Villa for the signature of Sam Johnstone in January. That’s because their first-choice goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has been ruled out for a while due to an injury picked up against Manchester United on Boxing Day.
The aforementioned Pickford is supposedly out for around eight weeks, meaning David Moyes’ side need cover for the next two months or so. It makes sense that the Scot would turn to Sam Johnstone, as the pair would’ve worked together during the Sunderland bosses’ time at Old Trafford a few years ago.
Now 23, it’s about time that Johnstone gained some Premier League experience as a goalkeeper, and perhaps a short-term loan deal to the Stadium of Light will do him the world of good.
In my opinion, he’s a more than capable goalkeeper who has never been given the chance to shine purely because of the sheer quality in front of him. It could be a really huge opportunity for him to prove to Jose Mourinho exactly what he can do – which can only be a positive thing for him.
