Manchester United will certainly need some midfield reinforcements when the transfer window opens this summer, whether Louis van Gaal is the man in charge or not. With Michael Carrick getting older, and the fans split over Marouane Fellaini, change in the middle of the park is a must.
According to the Portuguese media outlet A’Bola, Manchester United have had scouts watching Sporting Lisbon’s 23-year old central midfielder, João Mário.
The midfielder has been at Sporting since 2011, and has really made a breakthrough in Portugal over the last eighteen months or so, having played fifty times in all competitions this season.
His form has also warranted regular call-ups to the Portuguese national team too, having represented his country eight times since making his first appearance back in 2014.
Manchester United dealt with Sporting Lisbon a couple of summers ago when they brought in Marcos Rojo, and they proved to be tough negotiators. So if United do want to make a move for João Mário, they’ll have to act much quicker than they did when they prised Rojo away from Sporting’s grasp.
