Manchester United’s summer priority is to sign a new centre-back this summer.
That’s according to the Manchester Evening News, who adds that Jose Mourinho has an eight-man shortlist of central defenders that he wishes to bring in.
Raphael Varane, Toby Alderweireld, Jerome Boateng, Kalidou Koulibaly, Milan Skriniar, Alessio Romagnoli, Jose Gimenez and Caglar Soyuncu make up the list. The name mentioned most often has been Spurs’ Aldeweireld, but apparently, he’s not the number one priority.
United scouts have expressed concerns about the 29-year-old’s ‘profile’, which could well have put off the self-proclaimed Special One.
Look, it comes as no secret that centre-back is becoming a real issue. Victor Lindelof hasn’t worked out so far, Eric Bailly spent large portions of the season injured, whereas Phil Jones, well, he’s Phil Jones…
There are some intriguing names on the aforementioned list, though. The one that really stands out to me is Raphael Varane. The Frenchman is truly world-class and he’d improve any team in football. I’d also love to see Kalidou Koulibaly in United colours. He’s been absolutely brilliant for Napoli over the last twelve months, and that certainly would be an underrated piece of business if Edward Woodward could pull it off.
