Many thought that Jose Mourinho was doing the sensible thing in taking Chris Smalling off at half-time against Fenerbahce, when Manchester United were three-nil up and cruising. However, it wasn’t a change tactically, but it was one that was enforced through injury.
According to the IB Times, Jose Mourinho had to take Chris Smalling off due to an injury. The centre-back suffered a muscular problem, and now he is a major doubt for the game away at Stamford Bridge this weekend, which would be a huge blow.
Smalling is, without doubt, our most senior defender and is the real leader back there. Without him, a game against someone as physically dominant as Diego Costa becomes a lot harder – particularly with Daley Blind being the likely man to fill in at centre-half.
That also means Luke Shaw will come in at left-back which is an obvious plus, but Smalling’s absence would be a massive shame. Hopefully, the problem isn’t as bad as first thought and the England defender can get himself on that field come Sunday afternoon.
