Manchester United’s pre-season has largely consisted of poor results, even poorer performances and injuries galore.
Nemanja Matic will miss the season’s start, as will Antonio Valencia and Diogo Dalot as they recover. There are a whole host of stars still in recovery mode following their World Cup exploits, too…
Things haven’t gotten any easier for Jose Mourinho, either. Eric Bailly has struggled throughout the duration of pre-season with little bumps and bruises, those became even worse against Bayern Munich last night; resulting in the Ivorian having to be substituted off.
After last season’s injury worries, it certainly looks like more of the same for a man who is arguably United’s best defender. It was all about getting a good pre-season under his belt, but he cannot be anywhere near full fitness as he has continually been nursing small problems.
That has been shown in his performances, too. He’s looked positionally unaware, poor in the air and just far too unalert to danger. It probably highlights why the manager is pushing hard to sign a new centre-half, because these are certainly worrying signs. At this point, perhaps it’s best to let Bailly sit out for a week or two and fully recover, because the last thing we need is for him to make things worse.
