Manchester United dropped another two points in poor style yesterday, despite having plenty of efforts on goal. The inability to hit the back of the net eventually cost Jose Mourinho, who himself got sent to the stands after arguing with the referee on the day; Mark Clattenburg.
He made a few key decisions during the game that helped contribute to the result, including a red card and a clear as day penalty that wasn’t given. Another change that didn’t help proceedings was Jose Mourinho’s choice to bring on Wayne Rooney – who once again did little to nothing.
One particular pundit had some harsh words for Manchester United’s captain, saying he looked sluggish, lacking in match fitness and even overweight…
“He came on as a sub. I’ve got to admit, I thought he looked a little bit heavier. He looked very sluggish.” Jason McAteer is quoted as saying.
“Wayne Rooney, I think the way his body is, I think it’s not conducive to sit on the bench and not play any kind of football because he won’t be playing in the Under-23s. He won’t be ticking over and keeping match sharp.”
“He’ll just be getting his football through coming on as a substitute and I’d have to say that it’s not really conducive to Wayne.”
“I actually thought he looked overweight to be honest. That sharpness had gone out of his game. Everything he did, as you’d expect, it was safe. It was a lot of passing sideways.”
These are harsh words from Jason McAteer, but the 31-year-old forward does not look good at the moment. You feel he’s really struggling for form, and his confidence is going through the floor right now.
It’s tough to find a way back for him, and although he is so close to breaking Manchester United’s goal scoring record, he just doesn’t look like finding the back of the net any time soon.
