Manchester United and Liverpool are ready to battle it out in an effort to sign FC Barcelona midfielder, Ivan Rakitic. That’s according to the Birmingham Mail.
Apparently, Lionel Messi is adamant that the 30-year-old will not be sold this summer, but that reportedly won’t stop Jose Mourinho and Jurgen Klopp battling it out to sign the Croatia star.
It comes as no surprise that the Red Devils are working on deals to bring in at least one central-midfielder over the summer, especially with Michael Carrick retiring and Marouane Fellaini stalling on signing a new deal.
Even if Fellaini signs, it’s obvious to me that the midfield needs some work doing to it. Paul Pogba is struggling at present, and although I love Scott McTominay, you cannot put it all on the shoulders of a 21-year-old who has only just broken through into the first-team.
I like Rakitic as a player. He’s excellent on the ball, always picks the right passes and he’s good for a goal or two as well. He’d be the perfect box-to-box midfielder who’d complement Nemanja Matic and the aforementioned Pogba wonderfully. I guess the only downside is his age…
