Manchester United could fall behind PSG in battle to sign 25-year-old midfielder: report

Manchester United are being challenged by Paris Saint-Germain to acquire the signature of Fred.

That’s according to the Manchester Evening News, per The Sun, who says that the Ligue 1 Champions are in the market to sign a midfielder and they could jump ahead of the Red Devils in the race for the 25-year-old.

It comes as no surprise that Jose Mourinho is prioritising a move to sign a midfielder this summer. Michael Carrick is hanging up his boots, whereas Marouane Fellaini is still to commit to a new Old Trafford deal. It’s an area that already needed work, but even more so given we’ll potentially be losing two first-team bodies in one window.

The aforementioned report states that Fred has a £53million release clause in his current contract, which, all things considered, isn’t too steep in the current market. It’s no real shock that there is interest aplenty in the Brazil international; who I feel would be a brilliant signing for United.

Mourinho has been crying out for that third player who can slot in alongside Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic. The club would need that perfect blend of energy and on-ball ability, while also having some defensive-minded attributes too…

Losing Fred to PSG would be a bitter pill to swallow, but it looks as though the decision will be down to the player.
