Manchester United have already added one defender to the squad in the form of Eric Bailly, with the Ivorian clearly a talent and more one for the future than right now. However, Mourinho’s work isn’t done yet, and according to the Sunday Times, our new manager wants to add an experienced centre-back.
The three names they offer up are Jose Fonte, Leonardo Bonucci and Ezequiel Garay. All of which would fit the bill and be an excellent partner alongside Chris Smalling at the heart of our defence.
Jose Fonte has done excellently throughout his stellar career at Southampton, and even excelled during Portugal’s stunning European Championship victory over the summer. Now 32, he’d fit the bill nicely, but he isn’t getting any younger and he’ll be another year older before 2017 arrives.
Leonardo Bonucci would be another massive statement of intent by Manchester United and Jose Mourinho. The Italian is one of the most underrated centre-backs in the world. He’s 29 and has some real big-game experience under his belt, but he wouldn’t come cheap.
The final name of the trio is already familiar to Manchester United. Ezequiel Garay has been linked with an Old Trafford move before, but nothing ever materialised. He currently plies his trade for Zenit out in Russia, and perhaps it’s time to bring him back to one of Europe’s so-called ‘top leagues’.
