This summer, Manchester United’s interest in signing a new defensive midfielder has been well documented. Jose Mourinho is looking to bolster his playing squad, which is quite important given the fact that we’re now participating in the Champions League.
However, we may already have the ideal player within our ranks. In the modern game, the best defensive-minded midfielders have the ability to cover every blade of grass, are quick and absolutely love a tackle.
Step forward, Timothy Fosu-Mensah. The Dutchman is currently out on tour with the rest of the squad in the United States of America, and is already proving his worth.
He was one of the standout players against Real Madrid, although he played as a right-back during that game. With that said, I just think we’re missing a trick by not giving him a real run in the team as the holding midfielder.
Fosu-Mensah has all the attributes to play that job perfectly, and the best part is, he wouldn’t cost us a penny in a transfer fee. I hate using the term, but it’d be like having a new signing.
Under Louis van Gaal, Fosu-Mensah got plenty of minutes during the 2015/16 season, but for some reason, Mourinho decided to completely freeze him out of things. However, he’s making a great impression on the fans, and presumably the manager during pre-season.
I just hope that when the serious stuff starts, the gaffer gives him a chance in a meaningful game. The scary thing is that he’s still only 19 and the world is literally his oyster. Given a proper run in the team, he’ll come on leaps and bounds. All whilst saving the club a small fortune as they won’t have to fork out to bring in a new player.
