Manchester United has opened negotiations with Atletico Madrid to sign right-back Sime Vrsaljko.
That’s what The Mirror says, per The Metro. The 26-year-old is being targeted by Jose Mourinho, as he looks to bolster his defensive options before the 2018/19 season.
Croatia international Vrsaljko has played over fifty games for the La Liga side since his move to the Spanish capital in 2016. However, his head could be turned if Mourinho shows an interest in signing him.
The report says that United expect Matteo Darmian to leave this summer, meaning there will be space in the squad for a new right-back. There is no doubt that Vrsaljko would provide some much-needed competition for an ageing Antonio Valencia – and I’d certainly tip the current Atletico Madrid man to win that battle.
Following FA Cup final defeat yesterday, it’s pretty clear to me that United need significant investment this summer – that’s if they plan on challenging for the Premier League title next season.
Vrsaljko would be an excellent addition but he’d have to be one signing of many. No doubt manager Mourinho will be keeping an extremely close eye on the right-back during the upcoming World Cup in Russia.
