Manchester United planning to offload defensive duo as Mourinho frustration grows: report

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is set to seriously shake-up the Red Devils defence, starting with selling both Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, according to the Daily Mirror.

The self-proclaimed Special One is looking for at least one new centre-half, and you can hardly blame him, following some truly abysmal displays from the English pairing in recent weeks. Things came to a head against Newcastle United, when Smalling dived to give away a free-kick, that eventually led to the deciding goal in the clash.

Honestly, it’s been a long-time coming. Jones and Smalling are always good for a huge mistake at a vital moment, but somehow, performances against Premier League minnows like West Ham, West Brom and Stoke City seem to save their Old Trafford careers.

These guys aren’t young anymore and they’ve had opportunities aplenty. We simply have to sell at least one of the duo this summer, preferably Smalling, because he’s looked like a chicken in the headlights throughout Mourinho’s Manchester United tenure.

Our attacking options are looking fruitful at the moment, but now, our back line and midfield need some serious work. Things have to change if we’re going to challenge for the Premier League title anytime soon.
