Manchester United are ready to make their move for the £54million-rated Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane.
That’s according to Spanish media outlet Diario Gol, translated by The Sun. The report adds that Madrid would be willing to sell, as Florentino Perez wants to generate some cash in order for manager Zinedine Zidane to strengthen Los Blancos’ playing squad.
In all honesty, this is a rumour that seems to crop up every single summer, and it’s understandable why. Jose Mourinho used to manage Varane during his time at the Santiago Bernabeu and the Red Devils are desperate for another centre-back.
That doesn’t mean to say I wouldn’t love to see Varane in Manchester United red, because I would. I just don’t think Madrid are going to part with one of their best defenders.
Sure, if the club feel this transfer is a genuine possibility then they should pull out all the stops to sign him. Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof simply aren’t good enough to play for United week-in-week-out, and Varane would be a huge upgrade on the aforementioned trio.
The Frenchman in a partnership alongside Eric Bailly is the stuff of dreams, but I think it’ll remain just that, unfortunately.
