Manchester United are prepared to make their move for Thomas Vermaelen, as his current manager Arsene Wenger refused to rule out a move away from Arsenal as he met the media yesterday. According to The Guardian, United are the current favourites for his signature, but face competition from Barcelona.
Vermaelen, 28, would cost around £12million to any potential suitors, and it is believed Manchester United are ready to ahead with a move despite the Belgian suffering from a hamstring injury that could rule him out of the start of the season due to a lack of match fitness.
Arsenal would obviously prefer not to sell Vermaelen to a direct rival in Manchester United, but if nobody else matches our valuation, and the player himself wants to stay in England then they may eventually have no choice.
He’s currently Arsenal’s captain, which obviously says a lot about his talent and leadership abilities. You do however worry that if he isn’t good enough for Arsenal week-in week-out, what makes him good enough for Manchester United?
Maybe Louis van Gaal has a plan for him, and we all know he does like to have one left-footed centre-back at the heart of his defence.
