According to the Mail Online, United failed with an £80m for former star Cristiano Ronaldo. It is believed this failed attempt led to United’s poor transfer window, because United firmly believed they would get their man. The deal isn’t dead yet though, with United set to go back for the 27-year old next summer.
Ronaldo’s current Madrid deal expires in 2015, so if the player hasn’t signed a new contract by then a transfer away from the club could definitely be on the cards. Surely if he were available, United would be amongst the front-runners for his signature, but you cannot rule out big spenders such as PSG and Monaco.
Gareth Bale going to Real Madrid as the worlds most expensive player could also be a contributing factor. Thats a tag Ronaldo has held for the past few years, and he won’t be happy at the fact that he doesn’t hold that title anymore; And if reports are to be believed, Real Madrid wanted the Spanish press to suggest that the Bale fee was lower than Ronaldo’s just to keep him happy.
United have set aside another £80m for next year to go back in for the player, and with the #7 shirt still vacant, who knows what will happen.
