Manchester United have told Ander Herrera that he’ll be sold to Atletico Madrid in the summer, according to Spanish media outlet El Gol Digital, translated by The Express.
The Old Trafford fan favourite has endured a difficult campaign, being hit with injuries, while also falling down the pecking order behind Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic.
Apparently, Atleti boss Diego Simeone is keen on a summer overhaul, and he knows he’ll have to spend big in order to challenge for the title. Clearly, Herrera is at the top of his shopping list and in all honesty, this move certainly makes sense.
To add to that, El Gol Digital also go on to name Herrera’s potential replacement. They say Jose Mourinho is a huge fan of Ruben Neves, the 20-year-old who’s making a real name for himself at Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Championship.
I like Herrera as much as the next Manchester United fan, but he’s hardly irreplaceable. Sure, he brings an energy and desire to the midfield, but can you honestly say that he’s doing anything that McTominay doesn’t do? You also have to consider that McTominay is considerably younger than his Basque counterpart…
