Manchester United Football Club have always been known for having a rich history and following tradition, and although many doubted Jose’s ability to continue that – he proved otherwise at the weekend. The gaffer handed debuts to both Axel Tuanzebe and Joel Pereira, and now the former has been rewarded futher.
The club have announced that 19-year-old centre-back Tuanzebe has put pen to paper on a new long-term contract at the Theatre of Dreams, that’ll keep him at the club until June 2020; when he’ll be 22.
Although he only made his first-team debut against Wigan on Sunday, you’ve always felt like Tuanzebe was one of the hottest prospects in the academy, and to see him be rewarded with a new contract is great.
It’s always tough to judge exactly how youngsters will do when they grow and develop, but Tuanzebe has been putting in some brilliant performances at reserve level.
Personally, I’d like to see him get regular game-time in some way shape or form, and whether that’s here or on loan remains to be seen. For now, though, it looks like he’s staying put.
Upon putting pen to paper, Tuanzebe said:
“I have always been a Manchester United supporter so I am naturally delighted to have signed a new contract. To make my debut at Old Trafford in the FA Cup was a very proud moment, both for me and for my family.
“I am learning every day in training and it is also a great experience for me to now train with the first team. I would like to thank all of the coaches that I have worked with and I would especially like to thank the manager for giving me my debut for this great club.”
Jose Mourinho then added:
“Axel is a young player with great potential. We brought him up to the first team to give him more experience and he has adapted really well. I am pleased that he has signed a new contract and I am delighted with the progress he is making.”
A new #MUFC contract for Axel Tuanzebe!
