Manchester United were hunting that ‘marquee’ signing all summer long, but in the end they failed and made a deadline day swoop for the relatively unknown Anthony Martial of AS Monaco. But according to Florentino Perez, it wasn’t for the want of trying.
Perez has met the media and claimed that Manchester United came calling for Sergio Ramos on ‘two or three’ occasions this summer.
“There were interests,” Perez said.”United asked two or three times for Ramos but it was impossible that he would leave.
“The possibility that Ramos would leave was zero. He never wanted to leave Real and the club knew that Ramos would never leave. It took us five minutes to reach a deal.”
From minute one it felt like Sergio Ramos was always using Manchester United to sign a new contract, but it would have been foolish of the club to not attempt to go in for him whatsoever.
At the end of the day he gave United all the indications that he wanted to move and Louis van Gaal could do absolutely nothing about it when he decided to sign a new deal in the Spanish capital.
