One of Manchester United’s mantras over the years has been a willingness to give youth a chance. Jose Mourinho has tried to continue that trend, by handing chances aplenty to Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard this season. Now, in the last round of fixtures, he handed a full debut to Axel Tuanzebe.
The towering centre-half took his chance excellently, as he put in a commanding performance against Alexis Sanchez; completely taking the Chilean out of the game.
As you’d imagine, individual displays like that will encourage other members of the youth teams to try and match him and kick on to that next level. Now, Ro-Shaun Williams has been speaking to United about following in his mate’s footsteps.
“Axel’s doing well and has pushed up with the first team,” said Williams, quoted by United’s official site. “He’s working hard and looking to try to get a place in the team.”
“That’s what we’re both pushing to do: work as hard as we can and hopefully we can get into the first team. It’s what we’ve been working our whole lives for and why we’ve stayed at United – to try to get into the first team.”
Williams and Tuanzebe have been centre-back partners regularly this campaign, and as a duo, they compliment each other excellently. At just eighteen, Williams’ time will certainly come, but a knee injury has certainly hampered his growth somewhat this season.
I’ve no doubts that he will continue to prove his worth next year, and hopefully, Mourinho takes notice of the work he has been putting in. How great would it be to see a defensive duo of Ro-Shaun Williams and Axel Tuanzebe in five years time? If they both fulfil their supremely high potentials, it definitely could happen in my humble opinion.
