Manchester United’s Guillermo Varela will leave the Theatre of Dreams this summer, according to the Manchester Evening News. The 24-year-old Uruguayan will re-join Penarol back in his homeland after falling out of favour here in Manchester.
Big things were once expected of the right-back, who became a key part of Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United squad a couple of years ago. However, as soon as Mourinho took charge, he struggled to break through.
This is an excellently talented young man with the world at his feet, and he’s still young enough to make a real impact on the beautiful game. Unfortunately, though, it won’t be at Old Trafford.
Sometimes in this sport, you have to take a step backwards to be able to move forward, and that’s exactly what Varela has chosen to do. A move back home will make him feel much more comfortable, and the regular playing time will undoubtedly do him the world of good.
The aforementioned report from the MEN suggests that a deal could be confirmed as early as next week, and Varela will put pen to paper on a three-year contract with Penarol.
Personally, I wish him all the best and who knows, we may see him back in Europe in the future.
