Manchester United’s former CEO takes jibe at local rivals City

It was a tough night for Manchester last night, as both the red and the blue sides of the city lost their Champions League openers, and suffered injuries. Luke Shaw went off with a potential season-ending injury, with Vincent Kompany limping off midway through the second half.

David Gill who is now on the UEFA board has spoken out about his former club, as well as taking a jibe at our local rivals.

“I’m not being arrogant here but it (Manchester City) will never be as big as Manchester Utd in Asia and certain markets.” David Gill said.

At the end of the day, the former Manchester United CEO isn’t wrong. The Red Devils are a global brand and have been that way for many years now. Money can buy you success as Manchester City have found out, but it cannot buy you fans and a loyal following.

Manchester United have won more Champions League crowns than Manchester City have knockout matches in Europe’s premier competition, so City clearly have a long way to go in that area.
