Marouane Fellaini explains how United made huge contract mistake

Marouane Fellaini has never been the Manchester United fans’ favourite player, despite some excellent performances from him under Jose Mourinho.

The man from Belgium scored the winner against Arsenal at the weekend, proving to be a real nuisance in the air thanks to his physicality and presence.

As we all know, he’s yet to sign a new contract at Old Trafford, and now, the midfielder has finally spoken out on the situation. His words certainly aren’t going to sit well with Red Devils fans, though…

“The entire staff is doing everything [so] I can stay,” he told Sport Voetbal Magazine, translated by Sky Sports.

“The club did not renew my contract last year. Now I am in a strong position, especially since Mourinho has stated that he wants to keep me.

“Last year I went to the coach and I said that I wanted a new contract. I then had a second meeting, but I will not ask it 10 times.

“Afterwards I became important for the team… and a good player costs at least 50m euros. The club knows that they went wrong there.”

“I am now 30 years old, at the end of my contract and negotiating with Manchester United,”

“There are several clubs that show interest. I’m waiting for what’s going to happen.”

I’ve always given Fellaini my backing, but these latest comments have irked me. He’s rather blatantly holding the club to ransom in an unsavoury manner.

There’s just a snobbiness about it all. He labels himself as ‘important’ to the team. Sure, he’s played a part in a few goals here or there, but he barely featured in the middle of this season through injury.

I get the fact that he’s approaching the latter stages of his career and he wants one final payday, but does he have to take it so public? He has to realise that United fans barely tolerate him anyway, so these latest remarks are just going to tip them over the edge.

Like I said, I’ve always backed him, but after these remarks, he can leave for all I care…
