Match Preview: United vs Wigan (Community Shield)

United last won the Shield in 2011 after coming from 2-0 down at half-time to beat Manchester City 3-2 with a last minute winner from Nani. As a club we’ve won the Community Shield 15 times outright, and shared four of them. Moyes will be hoping to win his first United trophy by overcoming Wigan today.

Over 40,00 Reds will take over London today, after the club sold out all their allocation before requesting more due to phenomenal demand.

With a trophy up for grabs, you’d fully expect Moyes to play the best team available to him. Robin van Persie and club captain Nemanja Vidic were rested on Friday night amongst others. So both look a certainty to start today, there may also be a start for new United starlet Wilfried Zaha.

Wigan will be well up for this game, their new boss Owen Coyle started his Latics career with an excellent 4-0 win on the opening weekend of the Championship. Also who can forget their last visit to Wembley? They beat Manchester City 1-0 in the FA Cup final.

Moyes has confirmed that Wayne Rooney, Ashley Young and Nani will miss the game due to injuries, but expects Rooney to play some part in the England game midweek which is a bit odd.

I would also like to see some more of Adnan Januzaj, the young talent had a storming game against a tricky Sevilla side on Friday night. The sooner the club get a new contract on the table for him, the better.

Score prediction: United 2-1 Wigan
